anchor - <a> tags using CSS background images have no text -

i have tags , submit buttons on website built using background images included words submit, go, etc. if images disabled buttons disappear. specifications when building website quite detailed , strict.

  • they mouse-over effect when hovering on buttons. accomplished image sprites background images , hover selector.
  • they purchased special font used in graphics not web standard font.
  • they drop shadow on text in graphics , of buttons have white text.
  • they rounded corners on buttons background images have transparent corners because pages white , forms have yellow background.

one solution thought of not have give put 1 pixel transparent gif in img tag in anchor tag , put "go" or "submit" text in alt attribute. acceptable, seo purposes?

the other method leads chain of changes i'd rather not do, if have to. keep background image move text anchor link , use standard web font. since still white text on white page , not visible, i'd have assign dark background color. since appear behind transparent corners of images, i'll have make multiple versions of same buttons different background colors white , yellow page/forms.

or there else haven't thought of?

from general dom spec, there no mandatory requirements <a> tags have text; can have, e.g., image (<img> element) may serve 'clickable' link.
